WHEAT EMBARGO
DISPOSAL OF THIS SEASON’S CROP The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Nosworthy) stated yesterday that ho had been looking into the position regarding the disposal of this season’s wheat crop, in view of the fact that tho South Island farmers had recently approached him regarding tho obtaining of some definite statement from him as Minister of Agriculture as to the Government’s attitude concerning the embargo at present existing against the importation of wheat and wheat products from abroad. Mr. Nosworthy said that it was in tbo best interests of the Dominion to ensure that the farmer received a fair and reasonable price for his wheat crop so that sufficient encouragement would be given farmers to continue to grow enough wheat to make the Dominion self-supporting. In view of the fact that all the evidence points clearly to there being sufficient wheat in this country for its normal requirements for the current year, the Hon. Mr. Nosworthy stated that it was the Government’s intention to maintain the embargo until the end of February, 1924.
