COMPTROLLER OF CUSTOMS
MR. W. B. MONTGOMERY TO
RETIRE
Mr. W. B. Montgomery, 1.5.0., Comptroller of Customs, is to retire from the Service at an early date. Mr. Montgomery, who is regarded as one of the ablest Public servants in New Zealand, and is distinguished, even beyond..the confines of the. Dominion, entered the Customs Service in the year 1880, so that he has 42 years’ service to his credit. His capacity m administration early marked him for promotion, and he occupied the position of Collector of Customs at different ports at a comparatively early age. He was appointed Comptroller of Customs in 1910. In 1921 Mr. Montgomery accompanied the Minister of Customs (Mr. Downie Stewart) to the Commonwealth of Australia, and was a party to the discussion which took place in the arrangement of the reciprocal tariff now in operation. The vacant post will bo advertised, and Mr. Montgomery’s successor will be appointed in the usual way by the Public Service Commissioner.
