OPENED AT FEILDING RANGITIKEI A DEFEAT TE AWAMUTU B TEAM BEATEN BY PAREORA BY Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Feilding, March 15. The polo tourney of 1923 opened to-day at the Feilding Jockey Club’s grounds. Rain overnight made the ground somewhat heavy, and in places the ball did not travel truly. The high wind seemed troublesome at times and interfered with some of the strokes Considering the weather, there was a fair attendance.

RANGITIKEI A V. TE AWAMUTU. The first match was Rangitikei A v. Te Awamutu. Rangitikei attacked, but Te Awamutu speedily cleared, and W. Kay. by splendid play and a straight run down the .field, drew first blood. Te,Awamutu, 1; Rangitikei, nil. Te Awamutu again attacked and carried the hall nearly to their opponents’ goal, where Rangitikei got a free hit for a foul, and R. Wilson made no mistake in his hit. Rangitikei, 1; Te Awamutu, 1. Rangitikei attacked strongly and got the ball behind Te Awamutu’s goal.. In tho second spell Rgngitikei missed ta good shot right in front of the goal. The ball went behind. Almost immediately afterwards Rangitikei Blissed another easy shot, and again the ball went behind. In a good concerted attack, Scott carried the ball down the field and C. H. "Wilson scored. Scott, by a splendid run, took the ball to Te Awamutu’s goal, but by bad shooting missed his chance of scoring. Shortly afterwards Te Awamutu got a free hit for a foul. No score resulted. Frank Taylor saved his goal by a good, back-hand stroke, but N. Scott came again, and taking the ball from half-way, scored. Rangitieki, 4; Te Ayamutu, 1. Te Awamutu attacked, W. Kay taking the ball to goal, where he lost his stick. Play was even for some time in the fourth spell, when Levm did some brilliant riding, outpacing his opponents and on several occasions saving his goal. 11. Wilson lost the head of his stick near his opponents’ goal. Te Awamutu made a strong attack. W. Kay carried th o ball well down the field and scored. Rangitikei, 4; Te Awamutu, 2. In tho fifth spell Te Awamutu made several attacks, but Levin outrode Kay near the goal. Rangitikei then turned the tables, and K. Scott took the ball right down the field and scored. Rangit'kei, 5; Te Awamtfiu, 3. Rangitikei pressed the attack. Nelson Scott, after some good riding, enabled Lovin to score. Rangitikei, 6; Te Awamutu, 3. .After a concerted attack Rangitikei scored from a. melee in front of Te Awamutu’s goal. Rangitikei, 7; Te Awamutu, 3. H. Nelson made some good runs in the sixth snoll, and then play settled down for a" bit; but L. Kay, seizing an opportunity, scored for Te Awamutu. ~ N Rangitikei, 7; Te Awamutu, 4. Rangitikei then put in some jery strong attacks, and some fine riding resulted in two behinds. Still attacking, Nelson Scott scored. Rangitikei, 8; Te Awamutu, 4. The principal features of the rest of the snell were the stopping of Levin by L. Kay, and a good goal by Scott. Rangitikei, 9; Te Awamutu, 4. In the seventh spell, the players were getting distinctly tired. Rangitikei got two behinds, and then Te Awamutu' made a good run, but Levin rode Kay off, and spoiled this chance. W. Kay' then performed a like sendee for his' side, outriding Scott. . The game ended: —Rangitikei, 9; Te Awamutu, 4. Scott, for Rangitikei, and Kay, for Te Awamutu,,were the best players for their sides. t ‘ RANGITIKEI B V. PAREORA. Shortly after play commenced Paroora got behind. Still attacking, Pareora got the ball in front of Rangitikei’s goal, and had two shots at goal with no result. R. Scott carried the ball down the field with a brilliant run, but the ball hit lus pony’s hoof, and he lost his chance. Orbell carried the ball well down the field, and got a penalty for, a cross. A. Ellworthy hit a goal. Pareora, 1; Rangitikei, ml. Pareora got, an advantage having their team first on the ground when the gong sounded. Pressing their advantage, they scored. Pareora, 2; Rangitikei, nil, Orbell, who was always aiwut, naa a shot at goal, but only a Behind resulted. Pareora was then penalised, but the shot at goal was a failureFrom the commencement of die third gpell, Rangitikei carried the bah behind. From the iflay-out, Mil er made a- shot, but A. S. Pareora, 8; Rangitikei, ml. From a strong, combined attack, Orbell added another point. Pareora, 9; Rangitikei, nil. Rangitikei put in a strong challenge, and R. Dalrymple scored from a shot immedately in front of the posts. , Pareora, 10; Rangitikei, 1.
