QUEEN OF EASTBOURNE

CORONATION CEREAIONY. On Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Ground, Eastbourne, was performed the last, best act in a most successful carnival. Aliss Gladys Russell, the Football Club candidate, elected by popular vote, was crowned queen amidst the acclamation of the assembled multitude. Headed by the Scottish Society’s Pipe Band, a procession wended its way from the schoolhouse to the Recreation Ground, which was tho scene of an impressive ceremony-. The procession moved slowly once round the ground, and then to a dais beautifully decorated, and upon which was mounted a resplendent throne. Preceded by two heralds and attended by three princesses and their pages, the queen was escorted to the throne and the ceremony of investiture immediately proceeded with. In his eapae’ty of Lord High Chancellor, Mr. T. AL AVilford, ALP., proclaimed the decision of the people and their expressions of loyalty to Her Majesty during such time as' she remained Queen of the Carnival. This done, the crown was placed on her head, and she was presented. w : fh tho insignia of her high office with the title of “Queen Gladys I of Eastbourne.” Air. J. C. E. Turner (Lord Chamberlain) then returned tho thanks of Her Alajosty for the expressions of lovalty from her trusty subjects. The three princesses, in the order of their election, made deep obeisance to Her Afajesty, and with the sounding of trumpets by the heralds, the ceremony was concluded.

Her Majesty was pleased to confer honours upon the following gentlemen in recognition of their great work in connection with the arrangements for the—carnival: —Alessrs. F. H. .Mather (Mayor and chairman of executive committee). E. A. Dawson (returning officer). R. B. AVitty (organiser), J. C. E. Turner (chairman of the Football Committee), C. ITartridgo (Borough Council Queen Committee). Clifton (Phinket Queen Committee), HullBrown (Sports Queen Committee). The procession to the Recreation Ground was in tlie following order:— Scottish Society’s Pipe Band, Standard Bearers, Sword Bearers, Trumpeters, Bearers of Crown. Orb and Sceptre, Air. T. Al. AVilford, ALP. (Lord High Chancellor), Air. F. H. Alather (Mayor of Eastbourne), Mr. J. C. E. Turner (Lord Chamberlain), and 12 Flower Girls: Queen’s Emblem Bearer. Canopv Bearers, Queen of Eastbourne (Miss Gladys Russell) and her pages. Council Emblem Bearer, Princess of the Council (Aliss A r cra Shortt), and h°.v pages. Plunket Emblem Bearer, Princess of the Children (Airs. A 7. Jnwett). and her pages. Sports. Emblem Bearer, Princess of Sport (Aliss Alona TTiill-Browri) and her pages. It is impossible to refer, to the impressiveness of th” occasion without paying tribute to tho work that must have been done bv Aliss G. Helen Gard’ner in order to ensure that the ceremony should bo conducted without mistake. That it was so is creditable alike to Aliss Gard’ner and to the nrinc’pal performers. Credit, too, is 3no to Airs. J. A. Hannah, who designed tho dresses, which were all correct in detail according to the several parts which the performers were called upon to play.
