AND THE COMING ELECTIONS COMMITTEES SET UP Mr P. O. Watt presided at a meeting of the Civic League held last evening. There was a large attendance of delegates froip. the various municipal electors’ associations: also two representatives of the National Council of Women. The secretary (A[r. D. McLaren) reported that he and Mr. Stuart Milson had attended a meeting at Brooklyn the previous evening. It was found that the association there had been allowed to become moribund; and it was decided to resuscitate it. It was also decided to send Messrs. G. Re d and Whittaker to the meeting of the league as delegates.. Tho chairman said that it was necessary to discuss some plan of campaign.' and it was proposed, that they should set up (a) an executive of five: (b) a finance committee: (c) an organising committee: (d) a consultation committee, and (e) a publicity committee In the course of a rambling discussion on the procedure it was made clear that these committees were to attend to tho work in connection with the coming election, and that tho final selection of candidates for the Mayoralty, CJity Council, Harbour Board, and Hospital and Charitable Aid Board should bo done by a selection conimit- ■ tee consisting of one representative of each bodv allied to the leagueThat being made clear, it, was decided, on the motion of Mr. Blake, to proceed with the election of. the committees. The following committee® were appointed Executive Committee, Messrs. F. W. Downs, A. O. Blake. Stuart. Wilson. T. Grav. Finance Committee —Messrs. J. McIntosh. F. B. Mabin, and E. J. Collie. The secretary said that most of the bodies had not complied with the request made by the circular, viz., that they should name one of the two delegates to act on tho Selection Cofnmittee. The only ones named wore Messrs. Lambert (Northland) and Hildreth (Karori). The secretary asked for power to either write or personally consult with all the sitting members of tho bodies concerned, pointing out that as there was likolv to be. a. number of candidates, was it their intention to again offer themselves, and, if so. would they submit their names to the If a sue for selection. Mr. Aston raised tho point as to whether they should ask the sitting members if they approved of an independent investigation into the finance and general management of tho city. It was decide.d not to raise that issue. The letter to candidates would he a formal and courteous one. as to their intentions. A motion was passed authorising the secretary to communicate with the sitting members of all the bodies to be elected on April 26.
