ANOTHER CANAL

TO CONNECT THE ATLANTIC AND THE PACIFIC PROJECTED BY UNITED STATES BY TELEGRAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION. —Copyright. Washington, February 6. It is announced that the Government intends to build another canal in the vicinity of the Panama Canal with the profit derived from the latter. The plan will not be carried ogt for some time.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. PROVISION FOR LARGEST LINERS (Rec. February 7, 8.5 p.m.) New York, February 6. The “New York Times” Washington correspondent states that Cabinet gave serious consideration to the possible construction of another AtlanticPacific canal in the vicinity of tho Panama Canal, traffic through which has so increased during recent months that the facilitiea may soon be inadouatn for all vessels requiring transhipment. Tile tolls received increased 50 per cent, within a year. It is also felt that the larger liners would be unable to go through the Panama Canal, and provision would be made for such in the new canal, which probably will take a route through Nicaragua, with which a treaty exists giving the necessary right-of-way. —Aus.-N.Z.
