NOTES AND COMMENTS

BY GLEN COB. There will be racing at Hawera and Dunedin to-day. At tho Egmont meeting racing will commence with the Ohawe Hurdles. They are not. a good lot engaged and the favourite may be the Martontrained To Maire, who will have the services of A. McDonald. Golfajuello heads the card in the Flying Handicap, but he has 9st. 81b. in tho saddle, and he may find some of the light-weights going too fast for him. Valerie, who allowed up well at Awapuni, where she was backward, may be the best fe-day, as the racing can be depended upon to improve her. Irapuka can go very fast, and the circular course will help such a speedy one.

Kilcoo, who showed up well during the Taranaki meetings at Christmas, may be the best of the Maiden Handicap field. Thq three top weights in tho Cup are all good performers, and this should ensure a good race. Marqueteur had to be spelled after Awapuni, and he may not be as forward as Sunart and Kick Off. Of tho pair Inst named the chances of Sunart must be held in most respect f as he is racing over his favourite distance. He ran. a good race in the AVellington Cup, a.s did Kick Off. The connections of both are very confident, and it is certain that t-he pace will be on the whole way. Mark Time may be the best ci the others.

In the Apprentices’ Plate the top weight, Eucnre, will have the services of L. A. Pine, and this will give him an advantage over the other starters. Milit-nire ran well enough at Trentham to give him a chance over this distance, viz., seven furion,"js. AVith The Hawk, Rational, Tamotete, and Tarleton in tho Stakes there should be a good race, but after seeing what happened to the first-named in. the AA’aterloo Stakes at Trentham most people may bo prepared to support him to beat the others to-day. If reserved for the AA’aipapa. Hack Flat Handicap, Empyrean will have achance, as he has been showing fair form on the tracks lately. Complex is a better class than most of the other starters, and he may go out favouri te.

The distance in the A\ 7 hareroa "Welter Handicap should not present any difficulties to Askari, as he ran second in the Thompson Handicap. He appears to be about at his best now, as ho was noticed finishing very strongly in his only-start at Woodville, and as his owner thought him backward, the race can be expected to do him a lot of good. At AVingatui most interest will be centred in the result of the Cup. Gold Light may go out- a hot favourite, and in the light of her form this season it is most difficult to go part her. She has done til her work in a thorough manner, and her owner cannot complain of the way she is handicapped. Silver Peak may not get the distance, and. Cupidon seems to have enough weight, considering the fact that he has only once saluted the judge. Most, danger for the favourite may oome Ifrom _ iScrimmage. This mare has been racing well, out without any assistance from her riders, and she should never have been defeated in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton. As Limelight seems to have trained off, she will go out of favour for the Puhi cans’ Handicap. They are not & good lot, and if Sunny Loch starts ha may be the most in demand, as he has been galloping well on the tracks. His owner may. however, keep him for the AVelter Handicap later in the dav. In the event named he has a weight that will deter most people from supporting him, but, on th* other hand, he is a fine big horse that carries' weight well, and the company cannot be considered strong.

Sharp Burst, a Chokebore representative, rnav be tho favourite in the Trial Stakes, as after getting badly left in the Trial Handicap at Riccarton he then went on well and finished close up. There will be strong support for the treble AVellington winner. Razzle Dazzle, in the Champagne Stakes. That good horse Gasbag has been taken in hand again by J. H. Jefferd, who intends getting him ready for the Trentham Gold Cup. AVhile in Hastings getting possession of his new purchase Tigerland. TQtiinlivan also secured for Mr. Eric Riddiford a two-year-old full-sister to

Gasbag, and the horses have already arrived at Trentham. Tigerland is very fat, and will need a lot of work before he is ready to race. Reports from Sydney state that George Price is leaving there on February 14 on a business trip to "Wellington. Ho will be at the sale of the Absurd yearlings at Wanganui, and will endeavour to buy the Martian —- Bronzo .yearling. Trainer Fred Davis paid up for Kil-, lashnndra at Woodville, expecting Mr. T. H. Lowry to arriv<© but the owner decided to wait in Wellington, and see tho Test match, so Davis put the pen through the horse’s name. In addition to the victories recorded by Over There and Early Dawn, another New Zealand-bred gelding in Renunciation (Hallowmas—Pas Seul) scored in a ten furlongs race at the J’attersall’s meeting last month. The black gelding Hurry Up, bv Advance, who has been racing in Perth, has now been sent to Adelaide to. join tho stables of M. Whelan. He is to be schooled for hurdle racing. Some time back Cold Steel gor away with his rider, and bolted three times round the Hastings track. On pullin" up he was found to he very sore, so” it wad decided to blister him and turn him out for a long spell. Gartmore, who carries the colours or Her Excellency Viscountess Jelhcoe. has impi’oved a lot in appearance of late. Ho is to ho raced at the coming Wanganui meeting. Trainer Sid Reid, who has been located at Hastings for seme time past, is shifting to Trentham, and in future he will act as private trainer to Mr. V. Riddiford. He will have tlje three Eng-lish-bred fillies "in his charge, and also the Kilbroney—Afterglow colt purchased at the Wsikanae sale. In future L. Wilson will act as private trainer to Mr. W. G. Stead, as well as for the executors of tho Douglas Estate. The Flaxmere breeder has nine yearlings by Absurd from his own. mares that are to he broken m during the next couple of months. 4fter her poor showing at Riccarton, Limelight is likelv to go out of favour for the Publicans’ Handicap at V ingatui She has heen a good favourite for this event since the appearance of iho weights. . From Now Plymouth conies word of the death of K»to- the five-year-old son of Foremost—Coronet mare, who died as a result of a severe attack of strangles. V.R.C. HANDICAPS (Rec.
