High winds with previous heavy showers did not provide very pleasant conditions for the match M.C.C. v. Minor Associations to-day, although the weather remained fine. 'Hie wicket was dead at the start, but the wind dried the surface quickly, and left it in favour of the batsmen. Hartley won the toss, and the visitors, commencing their innings at 2.25 o’clock. they batted all the afternoon, chiefly on account of a kt'ight but not faultless 136 by Calthorpe, and when stumps were drawn bad eight wickets down for 306. There was an attendance of about 1000. Batting commenced brightly, 100 beinjr telegraphed in 60 minutes, but tho latter, part of the game became slower. Calthorpe gave three chances. With the exception of Gibson and Hartley, none of the others displayed international form, and the wickets went fairly cheaply. The ground fielding and throwing of the home team were good, but their catching was faulty. Lord Jellicoe and his party were interested spectators. Following are the scores: — M.C.C. First Innings. Freeman, c. Bennett, b. Grant ... 3 Calthorpe, c. F. Hoar, b. Bennett 136 Brand, b. Grant 24 Wilkinson, b. Hodder 6 Tyldesley, b. Massey 11 Hill-Wood, c. Grant, b. Hodder ... 1 Hartley, b. Grant 43 Gibson, not out 58 Wilson, not out 11 Maclean, b. Macaulay took four wickets for 30 and Fender four for 60. Marylebone in the second innings had lost one wicket for 142 (Russell 56. Sandham 60 not out), when stumps were drawn. The weather was fine and the wicket good. Except Catterall, the Transvaalers made a poor showing against the good bowling and fielding. Macaulay’s leg theory proving most effective.

Tlie Englishmen adopted careful tactics against good bonding,—Reuter.

Wilson, (chairman), AV. G. Hughes, P. B. Broad, J. Reid, R. Murphy, P. R. Fulton, W. R. Bock. The South • Canterbury ‘Association wrote, stating that it was not. strong enough financially to make any guarantee for a match with the Wellington team, but if tho latter could see its way to play a match without guarantee it would do a lot of good for cricket in South Canterbury. It was decided to reply that Wellington would play a match at Tiniaru on February 21 and 22. The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote, requesting to be supplied with particulars of the gross takings at th© M.C.C. matches played under the control of the Wellington Association.
