COUNTESS OF ERROL AT QUEEN’S WHARF

During the heavy north-westerly galo which raged on Monday night and yesterday morning, two of uhe best-port Coal Company’s hulks, tho Countess of Errol ’and the Alameda, received rough treatment. The Countess of Errm sprank a leak, which caused her to founder at the Queen’s Wharf yesterday morning. The Alameda-, while moored in the stream, carried away her bow lines, but the stem lines held, and saved the vessel from breaking adrift. The Countess of Errol wa-s lying alongside the Union Company’s collier Komata at the inner tee of tne Taranaki Street Wharf throughout tho night. The hulk had received 270 tons of coal from tho Komata. Tho gale raged fiercely, and on Monday evening the hulk-keeper took his family a-shore, and then returned to the vessel. A considerable sea was running, causing water to come aboard the hulk, and some of it got below. The'Confess of Errol was found to be down by tlic head by the hulkkecj>er nt 4 a.m. yesterday. The services of the tug Pelican were (obtained to shift the hulk to another berth. The Countess of Errol was noticed to bo sinking when taken in tow, so the Pelican moved her into the nearest lierth. No. 4 Queen’s Wharf. The hulk had scarcely reached the berth when she sank in about 28ft. of watei - . Tha hulk-keeper saved a few baskets and ropes before she fiWindered, but lost his own personal effects. The hulk rests on an even keel, her masts, derrick, and roof of the after house being the only parts visible. A start will be made shortly to raise the hulk and salvage her coal.
