POLICE, CIVIL AND BY-LAW CASES VISITOR IN TROUBLE Mr. E. Page, S.M., dealt with tho police cases in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. When charged with casting offensive matter in a publio place, Thomas James Hemming, a through passenger to Sydney by the R.M?S. Tahiti, explained that 'lately he had been residing in the United States, and had taken too much liquor upon his arrival at Wellington. The Magistrate, fined, him fis. for insobriety and £l, with tho alternative of three days’ imprisonment on the other count. BREACH OF PROBATION. A young man, William Walker Johnstone, was charged with a breach of his probation license, in that he had. been convicted and fined £5 for obscene language. Mr. A. B. Sievwright, his counsel, stated that the offence was almost identical with that on which the Supreme Court on Monday hod admitted accused to three years’ probation. Mr. T. P. Mills (chief probation officer) stated that tho accused had been dealt with on a charge pf unlawfully escaping from custody. Mr. Siovwright: I prod-uce this morning’s Dominion. I know this is not evidence, but here it is stated that Johnstone had pleaded guilty to a breach of the terms of his probation license. His Worship: I think the charge might be withdrawn, but the case will stand down until to-morrow. I will obtain a certificate from the registrar outlining the position. O’Reilly £4 7s. bv monthly instalments of £l. BY-LAW BREACHES Breaches of the city by-laws were dealt with by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. For failing to provide vehicles with lights, D. Alabaster and F. W. Neale were each fined 10s. and costs 75.; and J. R. Raw, ss. and coats 7s. Leaving a- car unattended for more than an hour cost H. Kortlang ss. and costs 7s. Charged with driving at a dangerous speed, W. Boyle and M. Kearney were each fined £5 and costs. C. H. Loughnan, who had exceeded the speed limit in Jervois Quay, was fined £1 and costs. i Failure to register dogs led to Charles Blake (two charges), George Sander, and Charles Whittington each being fined 10s. and costs, and ordered to pay the registration fee. 10s. R. Bond, who had failed to comply with a closing order, was fined 10s. and costs. For permitting stock to wander, the following were fined the amounts stated :—William Howan, Lavington , McWilliams, Paul Olsen, and H. Wiseman each £2 and costs 7s. : James Lowndes £1 10s;, William Murphy and A. H. Govdsn each 10s. and costs 7s. James King, for permitting offensive liquid to escape •on a road, was fined £1 and costs. R. W. Darroch, R. S. Bush, and C. W. Davies, who had failed to pay fines imposed by the Defence Office, were each fined 10s. and costs. 7s.
