FREE LABOUR ASSAULTED
TROUBLE ON A STEAMER BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, Februarv 5. Richard Williams and Patrick Byrne, two firemen, appeared in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court to-day. charged with assaulting Leonard Cullimore, a greaser on tho Wingatui. Byrne was also charged with the theft of several articles, tho property of Cullimoro, who is a free labourer. The evidence showed that accused, with others, went on board the vessel and assaulted Cullimore, and that Byrne ransacked his locker. Williams was lined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment. Byrne was fined £2O for assault, in default two mouths’ imprisonment, and £lO, in default three months’ imprisonment, on the charge of theft.
