MAGISTRATE’S COURT

$ POLICE CASES THEFT ADMITTED Air. E. Page, S.AL, presided over tho sitting of the Alagistrate’s Court yesterday. Theft of a handcart, valued at £3 and a case of bananas valued at 145., was admitted by Henry Newnes Lanceley, for whom Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson appeared. Senior-Sergeant Lander said that on Thursday last the accused had taken tho cart from a stand in Tory Street, and two days later had used it for the purpose of removing a case of bananas from a stack rear the fruit market which had been purchased by a Chinese fruiterer. Tho accused had been before the Court previously, chiefly for drunkenness and breaches of the by-laws, but in 1921 he was convicted for theft. In asking for leniency, Air. Stevenson mid that the accused’s wife was in poor health, and they had five small children, the oldest of whom was fourteen years. His Worship sentenced accused to 21 days’ imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. GIVEN A CHANCE. George Brackenbury, a seaman, admitted that he had insufficient lawful moans of support. Senior-Sergeant Lander said that the man had been working on a station in Hawke’s Bay, but on his way to Wellington he visited various towns in tho AVairarapa, spending his savings on liquor. He is suffering from the effects of his drinking bout, and medical treatment will he necessary.” So said Senior-Sergeant Lander, with reference to Archibald McNaughton, who was charged with insobriety—his fourth lapse. A remand for one week was granted. BREACH OF PROBATION ALLEGED On the application of the police, AVilliani Walker Johnston, a young man, charged with a breach of his probation license, was remanded until this morning.
