AN OCEAN YACHT RACE

TO PORT UNDERWOOD AND BACK

THREE MISHAPS The annual ocean yacht race from the Clyde Quay Wharf to Port Underwood, thence back to the starting line, was contested under the auspices of the Royal Port Nicholspn Yacht Club during the week-end. At 2.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon ten yachts got off the mark. It was then blowing a fresh nor’-wester. For a. time the yachts hung well together, but tho Marangi and the Kotiri II gained ground by standing over to the ©astern shore when making for the entrance of tho heads. From then on there were several changes in tha places. Before reaching Port Underwood on Saturday evening, the yachts were headed off by the wind, and made for Cloudy Bay. Finally, however, Port Underwood was reached. At 10.30 o’clock yesterday morning a start was made on the homeward journey. Tile boats had a fair sail home, the wind being well westerly. The journey was accomplished in six to seven hours. Three yachts met with mishaps. The crew of the Windward had an unenviable experience. The topmast split at Cloudy Bay at 9.30 o’clock on Saturday night. The mainsail was hauled down, and soon after the vessel set out for Wellington under a trysail. For six hours the little'yacht battled across thn Strait. Most of the crew were sick and hungry. The beat up the harbour lasted some hours and tho iv indwnrd made the boat harbour at about 9.30 o’clock yesterday morning. The Wanderer went ashore at Cloudy Hay. She missed stays twice. Finally the crew got her afloat, but she was strained and leaking a little. She got back to Wellington, however, last evening. The Marangi, on the return journey, badly bent one of the arms of tho cross-trees. Tho mainsail had to be lowered away, and she continued under a storm trysail and mainsail. The Kotiri II did not compete in the return journey. TiVJlnwinrr nra rJof.n ilprl TPRlllf.s •—
