LAWN TENNIS

INTER-CLUB MATCHES

RESUMED FRANCE BEATS PEACOCK IN LADDER GAME After a somewhat- lengthy interval, due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, and to the fact that many of Wellington’s players had gone to trv conclusions at the tournaments in ■otjher centres, the inter-olub tennis matches were resumed on Saturday. The weather was fine, but very windy. With some of the courts more exposed to the wind, its strength made accurate tennis, and indeed good tonus, a matter of impossibility. Despite that fact, however, some very good games, closely contested, were WI F nessed, although on the other hand some of the wins wore easily obtained. It will be noticed that some teams defaulted. This is to be regretted, for a defeat however severe is preferable to not putting a team in at all. It is understood that some clubs complained that the notice received was too short to permit of a team being 59 -< got together. At the same time, where seniors were not forthcoming ■ juniors could have been made to fill the position for the time being. It will bo noticed, too, that an alteration has occurred in the first and second positions of the Wellington ladder. After a hard game played on tho Thorndon courts, L.. Franco (Brougham Hill) succeeded in taking from J. C. Peacock (Thorndon) the position he had so long occupied, that of first player. , INTER-CLUB MATCHES In the men’s senior grade.
