The Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting was held in fine but hot, windy weather to-day. The attendance was fair and the racing good. The totalizator investments were £24,158, against £29,437 last year. The course was in excellent order, while the lawns and gardens were looking their best. For the Hornby Handicap the whole of tho seven acceptors went to the post. By general consent it was the worst field that could be got together. Petunia, Raconteur, and Amendment was tne way the public fancied them, but the trio failed to return any of the investments. Petunia led for six furlongs, when she was done with. Roniform next look charge, and camo into the straight with a good break. First Aid put in a "reat run nt tho finish, but she could not reach the leader, who won easily. Maharanui and A’otisb were not saddled up for the Trial Stakes, for which tho public backed Gay Life and Valdamo fairly evenly. At the start Bonny Friend led from Heraldry and Proliliman. The two latter were in charge till the straight entrance, where Barmaid shot out. Over the final furlong I’aldamo ran to the front, and hd won very easily from Barmaid, with Heraldry a poor third. Carette and Shnrphnrst were the next to finish. For tho last Midd'e Park Plate there, were five runners, and all two-year-olds. Alurihaupo’s 101 b. penalty did not deter the public from making him a good favourite. He was always in the van, and. attended by AVild Hind, tho pair left the field, the favourite winning by a length. Liicinette was five lengths away, and Owlscombe was fourth. The time was very fast, but a heavy nor’-wester was behind the field.

All started in the Midsummer Handicap. Scrimmage being a good favourite, with Palestrina second choice. The race was run at a middling pace, and early Palestrina was in the lead. Down the back she had a break of three lengths on Bnad'ce'a, with Royal Star and Trespass in tho rear. Palestrina was first into the straight. where scrimmage came on the outside of the field. In tho inn to the post she looked to get up. but the judge awarded the race to Palestrina. Roval Star was two lengths away, and then came Red Gown. Scrimmage, was the unlucky licr-e of the iaco

The Chokebore bracket, A 7 iewpoint and Thorndale, was the favourite selection of backers for the Lyttelton Plato, which was contested by a moderate field. 'Heathcote led to the course proper, where Viewpoint shot out, and won easily from Gay Juliet, who finished well. Sunny Loch and Meteorite were missing from the Craven Plate. Limelight carrying most money, Mustard Pot being second choice. It was a patchy start. Rod Hind getting out on the move. When they had gone a furlong. Battle Scene led from Red Hiod/Bon Spec, and AVill Oakland. Tho leader was first into the straight, and in tho run home she was challenged by Limolight and Pluto, but ?ho hung on mi'i won. by a neck from Pluto, with Limelight two -lengths nwav. Red Hind was fourth. IVith a better run in the middle stages Pluto won Id havo won .

The winner was the quickest to bo"in. hut sho was steaded. and ran behind Piccaninny intp the ■itrn’gbt. She was then allowed her he'd, and won ns above.
