A startling incident occurred on the Auckland-bound Main Trunk express as it was nearing Tanmarunui last week (reports the “Herald”). A large stone, apparently thrown by an unknown person, came through the window of the second-class compartment of the ladies’ carriage. The fall of splintered glass greatly alarmed the occupants, half of whom were sloeping children. No other damage was doma, although it was fortunate for a young girl occupying the seat next to the window that she, had but a few minutes before changed her position of rest from tho window frame to the shoulders of a sleeping companion She received tho failing missile upon her shoulders, and was covered with fragments of the broken window. The lu.dv attendant of tho car was soon the scene, pacifying startled mothers »nd children. Her examination of the window showed a four-inch hole, and »ho stone was picked up in the carriage. The police are investigating the matter.
