TRENTHAM RACES

THE CUP WON BY RAPINE AFTER A THRILLING FINISH TELEGRAPH HANDICAP WON BY TAMATETE The Wellington Cup meeting attracted a big attendance of sportsmen from all o ver the Dominion., Prioi to the opening of the racing hundreds spent a pleasant houi in , viewing the new members’ stand, and on all sides it was voted the finest in New Zealand. The Wellington Cup was won by Rapine, and the Tele graph Handicap went to Tamatete.

The attendance at Trentham races on Saturday included the Right Hon. the Premier (Mr. Massey), Sir William Fraser, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir George Clifford, Mr. T. M. Wilfonl, and several other M.P.’s, Messrs. E. J. Watt (Sydney), H. M. Campbell. 1. H. Lowry, and J. S. McLeod (Hastings), E. Davis,, and C. A. Brown (Auckland), L. McKenzie, R. A. McKenzie, G. D. Greenwood, G. Gould, W. R. Kimball, AV. Duncan, T. Duncan C. F. Vallance, A. McDonald, AA r . 1. Hazlett, and many others The racing was again up to the high standard, usually associated, with the Trentham course. Backers of the favourite had a bail time, as only one of the public selections finished first during the afternoon. The Cup was a wonderful race to watch, and the finish was a thrilling one. The victory" of Rapine was solely due to the clever riding of R. Reed. The winner is owned by the Gisborne sportsman, Mr. A. B. Williams, who unfortunately was unable to be present, The Martian three-year-old was turned out in great fettle by J. H. Jeflerd, and the latter was very confident of tho success of .the bay. , , . ■ Secretary A. E. AVhyte and his assistant, Mr. J. al. Griffiths, had all arrangements in smootn working order and there was not a hitch in the proceedings. As usual the big crowd mostly travelled by rail, and the Department handled the traffic with a minimum of inconvenience. . Hundreds saw the last race and were in the city before 6 p.m. _ ' The totalisator handled £58,029 10s., as against £59,302 for the first day last year. high-aveight handicap. Battle Song and Fisher declined their engagement in the High-weight Handicap, Sir Rosebery and Woden being the best backed. At the start AVoden and Raconteur gave trouble and the latter was badly left. Sir Fanciful was the-quickest to begin, but he soon gave way to Explorer and Comical. At the mile Explorer wa.s clear of the field, and followed by Comical, AVoden, and Sir Fanciful, he led into the straight. Two furlongs from home Glencairn ran into the lead and Sir Fanciful took second place. In the pin home Sir Rosebery camo fast and Explorer also put in a run. Glencairn Ileld his adyantage and won by a length from Explorer, with Sir Rosebery two lengths away. Sir Fanciful was fourth.

FITZHERBERT HANDICAP. Star Ranger and Tawihi were taken out of the Fitzherbert Handicap, Pantagruel being the public fancy. At the start Kilrls was tho quickest to begin and he led on to the course proper. Here Oliver got Suggestion up on the inside, and Pantagruel, Bugle Note, and Enthuse ran wide. Suggestion won by three parts of a length from Kilris. with Pantagruel a length ■ away. Ora’s Delight and Caress were the next to finish.

ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP. Bodyguard was the only scratching In ths Anniversary Welter Handicap, Sunny Loch being favourite with Lucius second choice. The field was bunched for a furlong, when Blackmail shot out and led an a fast pace into the straight. Here Lucius, Bella Lake and Zircon were next to the leader. At the distance llaurangi shot up on the outside, and in the finish he won nicely from Blackmail, with Lucius right rip. Conflict and Zircon were the next I to finish. APPRENTICES’ PLATE. There were numerous scratchings in the Apprentices' Plate; and Para started a very hot favourite. She had every chance, but was beaten out of a place. At the start Petunia took charge and , z with Veil and the favourite in attendX ance he led down the back with the rest of the field strung out. Turning into the straight the leader was still clear, and though Veil and Diamond Ring challenged he held his own and won by three lengths from Diamond Ring. ' Blissfulness finished well and beat Veil for third place. Para finished next.

WELLINGTON CUP. Income, Palestrina, and Bonnie Heather were missing when the field s paraded for the Cup. There was a rush to get' a glimpse'of the candidates, and it was voted on all sides the classiest field that had ever contested the race. In tho birdcage, . Cupidon was much admired, and so ' were Scion, Insurrection, Kick Off, Rapine, and .Merry Day. It was a wonderful betting race, nearly the whole field being heavily backed. Sunart, Insurrection, and Cupidon was the order of favouritism. After a perfect start, Rapine and Kick Off were the ' first to show out, but. Sunart headed them going into tho straight. At the mile he gave way to Bitters, who had ' a break going down the back. At Z- the five furlongs Bitters was well clear, but the remainder were bunched. Entering the straight, Bitters was followed by .Merry Day and Trespass. Two furlongs from home Kick Off, Rapine, Scrimmage, and Cupidon were prominent behind the leader. At tho distance Rapine shot up on tho rails, and Kick Off ran up on the outside of Bitters and Merry Day. In a great finish Rapine won by a head/ from Merry Day, with Kick Off a neck away. Sunart was fourth, and then came Scrimmage, Bitters, Insurrection, and Cupidon. Crown Star was the last to finish. The race was run at a clipping pace the whole way, and was thorourdilv clean. r I he first two furlongs took 26sec., the half-mile 50 2-5 sec?, five furlongs lmin. 2 3-sscc., mile lmin. 40 l-ssec., full distance 2min. 31 4-ssec. WELLINGTON STAKES.

Epitaph was a. good favourite for tho Wellington Stakes, Queen March and Razzle Dazzle being backed in that order. Tressayi jumped off badlv, and the others ran in a bunch on to the course proper, where Ransack was showing out from Razzle Dazzle and Queen March. In the run home Razzle Dazzle finished tho best, and won by a bare length from Ransack. Queen March was a neck a.wav, and then came Mild Hind. Ep't'n’i ian very badly, and finished WeU TELEGRAPH HANDICAP.

Gold Light was the only defection from tho Telegraph Handicap. Tanmteto was a good favourite, and he pulled his backers through, but he only had' a head to spare at thp finish. Killashandra, The Hawk, and Tama-

tete were in the van into the straight, where Killashandra ran wide. Tamatete was then clear, but Killashandra camo again, and in a great finish the top-weight won by a head. two lengths away, and then camo Kerb, Civilform, Mantua and Tho Hawk in a line. The performance of the top* weight was a grand one, and. his best to. date. There will be a lot of interest In the meeting between he and Glentruin in the M’aterloo Plata on AVednesday. RUAPEHU HANDICAP

Another reverse was in store for backers in the Ruapehu Handicap. Several of the big field were well backed, but Refrigeration was the actual favourite. The quick beginning Paphian was soon clear and led all the wav. Deroulede made a great effort to overtake him, but Paphian had a two lengths’ advantage at the finish. The favourite was third. - Details of the racing are:— TRENTHAM HIGH-AVEIGHT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs.; second horse 70 sovs., and third 35 sovs. from

ACCEPTANCES FOPv TO-DAY

THE FIELDS REVIEAVED

MUNGAROA HIGH-AVEIGHT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs. One mile and a quarter.

The acceptances for to-day’s racing are on the big side and matters do not look favourable for backers. ,The rain of yesterday will slow up tho going, but as a general thing backers will be well advised to follow the form of tho first day. HIGH-M'EIGHT H ANDICAP.

Tn the High-Weight Handicap Glencairn has boon raised 131 b.. and Explorer 51b. The northern owned horse mav again beat Explorer, though the latter was not well handled on the opening day, and he will have the services of R. Bagby to-day. WELTER HANDICAP. Tho going will bo in favour of Blackmail in tho AVclter Handcap, but ConfTct, who was not well placed early on Saturday, should go better to-day. Hatnvngi is well treated and should be handy again." DOURO CUP. The Douro Cun is tho biggest problem of tho day. There are 24 acceptors and probably the large size of the field will spoil speculation. Blissfulness finished on well at the end of the Apprentices’ Plate, which was a fast race, and he should be handy at tho finish to-dav. NURSERY HANDICAP.

In the Nursery Handicap Razzle Dazzle, winner of the Wellington Stakes, may be the best backed, but Orofino is also certain to have a big following. MAIDEN HANDICAP.

The Greenwood bracket, Valdamo and Veil, may be at a Gloaming price in the Alaiden Handicap as the opposition Is very weak RACING CLUB HANDICAP.

Rapine is tho only noticeable absentee from tho Racing Club Handicap, which should provide a very fine race.

ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY

Tho consistent Merry Day will be prominent and so will Silver Peak. METROPOLITAN AND CAMP HANDICAPS.
