TOE MISHAP ON THE TAHITI
London, January 19. In connection with the attempt to rescue a seaman in the. steamer Tahiti’s hold in San Francisco last February, thq King lias awarded p. silver medal for gallantry to Donald McDonald, chief officer, and bronze medals to Seamen George Archibald, James Lyon, John Norris, and Laurence Faiichelle, and a gold medal for Foreign Service to Captain John Kearney, of tho San FYancisoo Fire Department.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. [Tho Tahiti had been, fumigated with deadly poisonous cyanide gas by the Port Health authorities of San Francisco during the plague scare. The authorities declared tho ship’s holds safe, but two Now Zealand seamen on going down io work the holds were gassed, and died in a few minutes. A gallant attempt was made tq rescue them.]
