SOUTH AFRICA
RECOVERING FROM GREAT
DEPRESSION
Cape Town, January 19. Parliament has opened. The Gov-ernor-General’s Speech welcomed the signs that the country was beginning to recover slowly from the unprecedented depression, but added: “It is feared that the further occupation of Germany, may bring about an economic crisis in Central Europe, which may have very far-reaching effects, even for South Africa. A revival in the diamond market -is rendered possible by the early resumpt’on of work on some of tho mines. Tho gold industry is being carried on on a sounder economic basis and a larger scale, arid Customs returns show an upward movement. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
