BIG DISTR ICT RULED WITH AN
IRON HAND.
(Roc. January 21, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, January 20. According to Memphis “Press,” the so-called Citizens’ Committee at Harrison controlled 200,000 people of tho district with an iron hand for a week in efforts to drive out tlio railway strikers who were accused of sabotage. A correspondent declares that in addition to tho man hanged, thirty men were tied up and severely lashed while, four hundred men and women were driven from their homes. The citizens elected what is tantamount to a Government, ignoring tho regular courts and police, and carrying out their own sentiments. Every home in an area of four miles was searched for evidence against tho strikers. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
