TAXATION AND DEVELOPMENT
Sir, —I am much interested in the notes on taxation that hinders development, which appear in your issue of to-day. Friends in various circumstances of life in England have asked me whether I can advise them to settle out here. As far as I have got I have not been able to make a recommendation. It is most difficult to compare things which are different, but T think it is fair to say that land round about Hawke’s Bay is ns high in price as land round about London. For newcomers to make a start in sheep farm-ij-icr appears "to Be an vmclesiraß.e risk, at present prices asked for land, etc., especially in the. face of the great risk of competition from South, America, where I believe the soil is very good and labour much cheaper.—l am, etc., H.
