ALLEGED ASSAULTS

SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A YOUTH SOME AMAZING EVIDENCE No fewer than five charges of assault with intent to commit rape were brought igainst Stanley AVinwood McKissack Reid at the Magistrate s Court yesterday. . The information was laid in connection with an alleged assault on a girl of fourteen, who knew the accused, aged 18, before he left school. Mr. E. Pago, S.M., presided. The accused was represented by Mr. J. Scott. Evidence was- given by three married women, a young single woman, and the fourteen-year-old girl regarding the alleged assaults, winch were bbM to have taken place in tho Vicinity of Oriental Bay and Roseneath. It was stated that accused used to lurk in bushes and spring on his victims from behind. . placing his hand over their eyes and mouth, and dragging them to secluded spots. In the"case of two of the married women the distance was given as GO y n ™ s - Another married woninn stated that she was thrown down on the rocks, and her nose was made, to bleed, while in one case the accused was stated to have threatened to kill Ins victim unless she kept quiet One Woman stated that she was str tick in the face. ~ , Detective Jarrold gave evidence as to keeping a watch in the reserve where several of the assaults were alleged, to have taken .place, and to arresting tho accused, whose written statement?, substantiating the evidence oi the women, were read. , Mr. Scott, for the prisoner, n'eaded not guilty. Reid was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
