WELLINGTON & WANGANUI COLLEGES HOME TEAM OPENS WELL The annual match between Wellington and Wanganui Colleges commenced at the Wellington Collego oval yesterday, in dull but fine weather. The wicket was fair. Mackenzie won the loss from Hewitt (Wanganui), and elected to bat, Evans and McDonald opening to the bowling of Sladdeu, a left-hander, arid Tatham. Runs came quickly, and the partnership yielded 70 runs before McDonald was caught by Tatham, off Lance, a fast-medium right-hander. ’He hit five 4’s and gave no chance. Evans compiled a faultiest 45, which, included five boundaries. Mackenzie batted cautiously for 18, before he put his leg in front to one fi-om Louno, the slow bowler. Fitzmaurice and Foley added 64 for the seventh wicket. The former hit a 6 off Tntham, and played vigorous cricket, hitting five 4’s. Foley topscored with 50, and gave a bright display, which was marred, however, by two chances. The innings closed for 245, compiled: in 3] hours. Lourie sent down 12 overs for 28 runs and four wickets.

Wanganui opened indifferently, Rollings and Fitzmaurice keeping the batsmen quiet. Craig, the opening batsman, contented himself with singles. Rollings, a slow rightehander, with a nice leg break, had the batsmen often in difficulties. The century was posted after 90 minutes’ batting. 'Craig, who stayed the rot that had set in, played a valuable innings for 44, and was still associated with Ritchie at the drawing of stumps; the partnership yielded 52 runs. Six wickets are down for 124 runs. Following are the scores:— . WELLINGTON.
