NEWS FROM THE MOUNDS

Fine weather prevailed at Trgnthamon Saturday for the continuation of week-end competitions. The light wae. fairly steady, and the wind rear fishtail with a decided left tendency at times. It changed very r.lpidly sometimes, batching marksmen in the . act of aiming, while at others it remained steady for quite long intervals.. All the local clubs, with the exception, of Suburbs, fired at 300 and 500 yards on the Sommerville range. At 300 yards there were iome good scores, pride of place going to A. J. Jackson (Retene), who recorded 4555555555 —49. He was closely attended by his club-mate. Erie Ballinger with 48, and by F. Ching (Karori). 47. At 500 yards the wind proved more changeable. At this range the best total was secured by J. C. Carter tone) who got them all in but one, the next in order being Morrison and Croxton (Karori) each witii 47. The highest total for the afternoon went to Erjc Balljnger (Retene), 94. his nearest attendants being Jackson (Petone) 92, Low (Karori). Sneddon (Old Navals), and Carter (Petone). each* 91. Suburbs fired at 800 and 900 yards on the Seddon range. At the first range conditions were fairly good, but nt the longer distance became more difficult. T. Goodall got in a good 48 nt 800, tho next best being 45 by B. Dunn. At 900 yards J. Smart was; the only one with 40 or over, his 44 being a fine shoot under the conditions and distancing' the next best by points. He won the competition ‘with 4 points handicap, Goodall adding 38 to his first range score and being'best off the rifle. A feature of the Karori Club’s shooting so far this season has been the scores put up by IV. K. Osborn. He started out with a good handicap, but has been holding his own with the club’s best-, and in future will no doubt be figuring among the scratch division. The 300 yards, mound on the Sommerville range badly needs turfing. In wet weather it j s muddv and in fine wither very dusty and dirty to lie on. The cadets who are shobting with the local rifle cluhs are all doing' very well, and it is pleasing to note that the efforts of the rifle club members in coaching these lads in the use of the rifle are meeting with gratifying results. The programme -for the first prize meeting of the N.R.A. of New Zealand is now in the hands of the printer, and may be expected in about a week’s time. It is similar to the last meeting held on the Trentham range, the main features being retained? The entrance fee for the service matches will be 10s., for the eight matches comprising the King’s (including the opening match) £3, and for the aggregates the entry ,is optional. \ An invitation to attend at Trentham next March has'been issued to. the New South Walea and Victorian Rifle Associations, and also to the Commonwealth Council.
