WORTHY CAUSES

REV. FIELDEN TAYLOR’S MISSION. Excellent entertainment is afforded by the series of concerts by Wellington vocalists and tableaux presented by the Misses Youmans, which commenced last night at the Opera House. The proceeds go towards three worthy' objects, the maintenance of the boys’: hostel in Taranaki Street, to assist boys in liv-’ ing away from.home in leceipt of less than £1 a week, the feeding.of oldage pensioners, and the establishment of on orphans’ home 1 at Khandallah, the latter to cost £2OOO. Last evening a programme of musical merit was supplied. the vocalists being:—Mr. Claude Moss (“Border Ballad,” encore “Fairings”), Miss Reith (“Prayer in Absence,” encore “There’s a Wee Bit Land” and “Softly Awakes My Heart” rom “Samson and Delilah,!’ encored), Mr. J. P. Lavin (“Mountain Lovers” and “Because”), Messrs. Lewis and Allwright (duets, “Battle Eve” and encore “Garden of Your Heart”), Mr. A. E. Coe (“Nirvana” and “Go to Sea”), Mr. Howard Foster (“Allah,” encore “Sometimes in Slimmer”), and Mr. F. H. Williams (‘Wind of the Western Sea,” encore “Love’s Rhapsody”). Miss Mavis Windsor gave excellent character sketches, and Miss Queenie McLean recited “Dreams” and “Little Bov Blue” -with artistic effect. . The tableaux were staged with great attention to.detail, and were successfully posed. ’“The Queen of Sheba,” modelled on Sir Edward Poynter’s well-known picture, peacocks, lions, and all complete, was a gorgeous spectacle. “Marv Queen of Scots,” with headsman, block, and ladies-in-wait-ing, and attendants, was true in essential details, and was well arranged. “The Land of Nod,” representing young mothers with their children at the witching bed-time hour/ and “Dance of the Swords,” were two pleasingly grouped scenes. The lighting effects. were good, and the staging is a credit to the producer and Mr. H. Liardet, stage manager. All materials for the effective costumes were provided free of cost. The orchestra, under Miss Iris Trim, A.T.C.L., was brightly musical. The Rev. Canon Fielden Tavlor briefly thanked all those who had assisted, and announced that £750 of the required £2OOO was already in hand. A feature of to-day’s matinee and evening performances will he the community singing by the children. AU the children from the Wellington or-' jflianagos have been provided with free transport to the entertainment.
