ROWING.

REGATTA CREWS

There are few active oarsmen who do not await with interest the meeting of the Match Committee (composed of three members) which under ordinary circumstances is convened after the initial club races have been decided. 'That it is the wish and ambition of every member to discover his name in the selection for regatta crews, is not surprising when it is remembered that in whatever race he competes he has before him the reputation of his clpb to uphold. When so selected, do not enter for club races until after the regattas are over, and although the crews will be selected early this month, there is the possibility of a number of changes through transfers from Wellington, etc., even right up to a week or so before the race ; and it behoves every oarsman, whether he be .selected or not, to pay strict attention to training, so (that he will be able to step into a crew immediately should the necessity arise. A case in point was provided by the Star Club last season, when eight .different men rowed in a maiden crew. It is interesting to note that although a crew is picked by the Mfit , 1 Committee, any men who are eligible to row in the class may form a challenge crew, the rules governing tins being as follow: —(1) Challenge may be given at any time up to two weeks - prior to the regatta, and the race shall be rowed at the first favourable opportunity after challenge has been entered, and in similar boats and for the same distance as the regatta race. (2) -No crew can be challenged more than once (3) If the challenging crew is successful the Match Committee shall decide the crew from any members of the original and challenged crews. WITH THE CLUBS The Petone Club has certainly secured a flying start in the matter of selecting regatta crews. Following is the list of members chosen -Maiden fours —H. Adamson, A. Hickson, J. Weatlifrlv, J. Kirk. Maiden pairs— H. Adamson, A. Hickson. Youths foni —G. Gardiner, A. Warden, C. McLaughlan, W. Wilson. Junior Four— G Gardiner, A. Warden, C. McLauchlan, K. Rodger. Senior pair—M. Love, ; 0. Haddock. The new practice clinker four, built to the order of the Wellington Club, is expected to arrive this afternoon. The sister craft will make its appearance later in the month. Notwithstanding the threatening weather, and later rain and cold easterly wind,' large crowds lined thp banks of the Avon last Saturday to witness the opening of the season of the Canterbury Club, a feature of .which was the procession of gailydecorated Mats, including an effectively embellished craft, rowed by seven female members of the club. Advantage was taken of the opportunity (.to"’officially open the memorial racing •shed, a substantial concrete structure, which will, it is confidently thought, solve all the club’s . accommodation ’ problems for a long time to come. T. S. Bright (str.) and J. Johnsen (bow), successful in 1920-21, 1922 in the maiden double sculls, and only beaten by half a canvas at Wanganui in the juniors, are now in hard training in anticipation of forthcoming events. / The club pairs contest of the Petone Club has commenced, and last week-end several heats were rowed oft despite th© somewhat boisterous conditions. The first heat resulted:—C. Blirrid"e and W. Wilson beat J. Kirk and N. l Kirk: G. Gardiner and W.. Collins beat H. .Shardlow and N. Dick'ens: A. "Warden and R. HoUick beat A White and W. Reesby; A. Hickson and F. Cropp beat K. Rodgers and J. Wilson.

With -a view to competing in intercolleginte rega-ttas, twelve Hopefuls front* St. Patrick’s College have joined up with the Wellington Club. The boys have started training, and according to all accounts are showing fine promise. The annual regatta of the Tauramra Club will be held on December 27. Tlie Ellesmere 'Club has decided to hold its gathering on New Year s Day. Ten crows have entered for the contest for the ladies’ fours, .which will be rowed off under the auspices of the Star Club this afternoon. The unfavourable weather during the week has prevented training operations, shut an interesting race should in any event result, as the majority of the crews are “old hands.” . Tlie result of the art union conducted by ' the Welliimton Club gives first prize to Mr. Henderson, of the Balmoral Hotel (6759), and second place is occupied bv Mr. G. °* Thorndon Railway Station (4904).
