LEAGUE FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

Ideal weather favoured Rugby League players on Saturday. At Petouo tho local senior team mot and defeated Newtown after a very strenuous game by 19 points to nil —the score by no means showing the trend of the play. A team representing Federal (Christchurch) fourth grade defeated Petone after f. good game by sixteen points to ten.

PETONE (19), NEWTOWN (0). Newtown won the toss and played with the suu at their backs, there being practically no wind. Play opened witn a very strong attack by the home team, but tho defence was sound. When the teams had settled down i>lay became very fast, and both sides threw the ball about in good style. The tackling was excellent, and many opportunities to score wore thus frustrated. It was nbt until near half-time that the first score was registered. Kruse obtained from a scrum, and after beating his man passed to Nunn, who alter drawing tne opposing back passed to Riddell, who raced over. The same player made no mistake with the kick. Tho opening of the second half was marked by a strong Newtown attack, but their work lacked the necessary finish, and they were i<> pulsed. From a penalty Riddell landed a penalty-goal from near halfway. Play then became a bit rough, but tho prompt action of tho, referee soon nipped it in tho bud. Stanloid was responsiblei for the next scoie. Picking uo in tho loose he beat tin co opponents and crossed the,, line. Shanahan converted. Almost immediately afterwards Nunn picked up and notted a neat goal when suirotmded by opponents. Newtown took a hand at, attacking, but once again their work lacked the necessary finish. In tire concluding stages f. Nunn picked up in his own.. twenty five, and kicked. Following up fast, he caught the opposition napping, and, regaining possession, scored. Shanahan converted. Mr. J. Mears was referee.

At Emerson Street on Saturday, before a moderate attendance of spectators, City and Central played their last senior game for the season. From the kick off the game was of rather a fast nature, but brilliancy occurred only at periods during the game. Central played two men short, but though their combination was lacking in efficiency they played a good game, and managed to defeat City by 11 points to 6. 'Shortly after the kick-off Coyle got possession of the ball from the loose, and scored the first three points for City, but, the kick at goal failed.Central then began to force the game, and after a passing rush J. Hedges secured, and crossed the line for Central. His own kick at goal failed. Shortly after Foley, who was playing a very sound game, got possession from the lose, and after an excellent run down the line, and dodging one or two City, men, scored in the corner. The kick was a very awkward one. and J. Hedges failed to convert. The. whistle sounded for the first; half with tho scores: Central, 6; City, 3. Shortly after resuming, City made a determiner effort to increase their score, and the attempt was successful. Aamodt got the ball over the line for City, and added a further three points for the Yellow and Black, but the kick failed. The Red and Blades now got moving, and carried the ball well up the field, when Whittington drop-kicked a verv nice goal, making tho scores: Central, 8; City, 6. Central again got possession, and right- on time holey apam crossed the line, and added another tliree points for Central. Anderson failed to convert: Centr-d, 11; City, 6. Mr. C- Wrack was referee.
