EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night in the Council Chamber, the Mayor, Mr. F. H. Mather, presiding. There were also present Councillors H. McGill, C. Hartridge, H. W. Shortt, C. A. Marquis, and T. W. Pilcher. The Health Department advised that the sanitary rate would be increased to £BB per annum The Makara Council also wrote objecting to the increase. •—The matter was referred to the General Purposes Committee. The Postmaster-General wrote that the construction of a new post office at Eastbourne would be deferred until financial conditions improved. The Mayor thought the matter should be kept before the notice of the authorities, and Councillor Hartridge suggested that a petition should be at once circulated and forwarded to the authorities urging the necessity of a new edifice.

The Eastbourne Football Club advised tliat they would shortly be holding a carnival with the object of commencing the erection of a gymnasium from the' proceeds. —Councillors Shortt and Hartndge were appointed to confer with the club. To a request for a donation to the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund, the Mayor said that Eastbourne had already done very well in the matter, and the letter was received. The passenger returns for the month showed that the Duchess carried! 26,563 passengers, and the Cobar 12,069, a total of 1000 more passengers than for July last year. The general manager’s report stated that the plans and specifications for the now steamer had been approved by Lloyd’s, and' would be on hand for tho council’s approval shortly. Lloyd’s had expresed their willingness to furnish certificates as to the laying of tho keel, framing., ete. Tho manager also reported that the excavation and levelling for tho laying of the tennis courts was progressing and the building site for the tea kiosk had been enlarged, and covered with a good dressing of clay and! rock to prevent sand drift.
