AUTOMOBILE CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A committee meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club was held on Monday at the secretary’s office, 12 Panama Street. There were present Messrs. C. M. Banks (chairman), B. L. Donne, H. W. Lloyd, and J- J. Williamson, and the secretary, Mr. H. J- Stott. . , ' _.. A letter was received from the City Council with regard to the request from the club that the widening of Molesworth Street should be proceeded with, to the effect that there being no money available for the work this year, it had to be cut out, with many other items, in order to avoid an increase in the rates. The letter also stated that the work was not one on which the unemployed could bo employed. It was also pointed out that the work on Mount- Victoria upon which the unemployed were utilised was being done on account of a firm sending a> subsidy of £l5O to the council towards such work. A letter was received from the manager of the municipal milk department in reply to the committee’s complaint with regard to broken glass being left in the streets of the etiy, stating that instructions had been given to the roundsmen for them in future to gather up any of this glass, and a box is to be provided in each cart for the storage and return to the department of such glass! In reply to the secretary’s letter to the General Manager of the Railway Department, in reference to the bad state of Jervois Quay, a letter was received stating that the Department was not responsible to maintain the roadway over the portion between the Queen’s Wharf and the Fire Brigade Station, but the portion opposite the entrance to the Queen’s Wharf was recognised as in bad order, and arrangements would he made to have tho rails removed from this portion, so that the city engineer might have the road repaired. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to the City Council, with a request that the road be put in a better state of repair. The following delegates were appointed to represent the club at the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Automobile Union to be held early in September:—Dr. Prendergast Knight, Messrs. 0. M. Banks, L. A. Edwards, and T. Munt.

A member of the committee stated that he had been summoned in one da.y for failing to have a tail light and also for failing to have a head light on his car, and was convicted on both charges. He stated that he thought this ' very harsh treatment. by the police. The committee considered the matter and decided that the police were actually within their legal rights, although the conviction on two summonses for practically tho same offence in one day seemed unreasonable, but they could not see their way clear to take action.

The following new members were elected: —Dr. Usher, Messrs. R. Murphy, J. Murphy, 8. 8. Williams.
