WAGER PAID BY CHEQUE
BOOKMAKER CLAIMS FOR RECOVERY. (Reo. June 28, 11.30 p.m.) Melbourne, June 28. J. Colman, a bookmaker, has issued a writ against a Melbourne doctor for the recovery of £993, bping the amount ‘paid in settlement of a wager last year The amount was paid by cheque, and Colman bases his claim on the ground that the claim follows closely upon the decision of the executors of th® estate of Richard Garland. —Press Assn. [A message sent from Melbourne on Juno 11 stated: As none of the bookmakers against whonj claims have bepn made for the return of bets paid by cheque have refunded the. amounts, writs will be issued for their recovery. Claims have been made on behalf. of tho late Richard Garland in relation to the Victorian Racing Club’s spring meeting in 1918. Tho amounts vary from £l5O to £B5O, and total amount involved is nearly £6OOO. If tho case goes to colfrt it will be fought collectively, and to this end the bookmakers are establishing a defence fund. |
