MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE CASES Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. “A NUISANCE TO THE COUNTRY.” .Donald Matheson, who had many previous convictions against him, came up on a charge of drunkenness. The accused made a voluble plea for another chance. Sub-Inspector McNamara handed up a list of previous convictions against the accused. “You have been convicted 74 times,” said His Worships “you are only a nuisance to the country.” Matheson was sentenced to twelve months on Rotoroa Island. / AN M.P.’S BRIEF BAG. James Joseph Roche, a respectablydressed young man, appeared to answer a charge of having stolen a brief bag and contents, valued at £6 10s.. the property of Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P., during the passage of the s.s. Maori from Lyttelton to Wellington on Tuesday night. 1 Chief-Detective Kemp explained that the accused joame (from Wanganui, where he was employed in the Railway Department. He had been on a visit to Christchurch, and was returning when the offence was committed. A remand until to-morrow was asked for.
Mr. H. F. O’Leary, who appeared for the accused, asked that bail should be allowed. He was instructed, that this was the first time the accused had been in trouble of any kind. The remand was granted, bail being allowed in one surety of £25.
