SEEKING NEW AGREEMENT
DISPUTE BEING HEARD IN CAMERA
A conference undor the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, was held yesterday, <n regard to the wages and working conditions of the City Council'tramways employees. Mr. Newton (Conciliation ’ Commissioner) was sided. The agreement under which the tramwaymen. are at present working will expire on Friday next. At yesterday’s proceedings Mr. Mon.ieath acted as agent for the workers, 'and Mr. Grenfell for the Council. I By citing the Council in this way, 'the union can take advantage of the right to go out on strike, failing an agreement being arrived a,t, after a ballott of the members. The Minister of Labour appointed Jlr. Newton to conduct the proceedigs, and he called representatives of each side together. _ The proceedings were private, but it is understood the parties failed to agree on any material point. It is stated that the union is asking for an increase in wages, as well as for improved working conditions.
