One 1 of the many minor puzzles that shroud in mystery the workings of the Railway Department concerns the issue of its time-tables (states the “Otago Daily Times”).. One might be pardoned for thinking . that this valuable little publication with its full and concise information about railway facilities would be regarded by the Department as nn asset, and ’widely circulated with a view to increasing business. (Nearly, however, this is not the view of the Department, for its time-tablo is unprocurable from end to end of New Zealand for weeks .and sometimes months together. The policy is to issue-at long intervals a supply so small that once they are distriotued to the various centres they are sold out in a few weeks. The travelling public is then left to speculate as to what the latest alterations in the service mav be until eventually another issue of the time-table is doled out. With the price at- 6d. and abundance of advertisements, it does not seem likely that grounds of economy can explain this parsimony in the issue of time-tables.
