WANGANUI HARBOUR

BIG IMPROVEMENT AT LITTLE COST BY TSLEGBAPH—PBRSZ ASSOCIATION. Wanganui, May 14. Tho cry “back to Nature” has been adopted with good results by the AVanganui Harbour Board. A comparatively small sum was spent on harbour works during the past year, yet by gently guiding the natural current of the tides and stopping the sand drift a marked improvement has been wrought. It was reported at the annual meeting of the board that the entrance now shows the greatest depth of water yet recorded —24ft. Sin. at high water spring tides, and 21ft. Sin. high water at neap tides. The depth has been' increasing month by month since the new methods were adopted, and Mr. A. G. Bignell, who was reelected chairman for another term, expressed toe confident belief that liners would be berthed at Cnstlccliff- in the near future. The depth of water in the ■ river channel to the town wharf also has been much iinproved, the shallowest portion now being 14ft.
