Vice-Regal. His Excellency tho Governor-Gen-eral Viscount Jellicoe arrived in Christchurch on Tuesday evening, and will stay with Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes, at “Te Koraha,” Merivale. Yesterday he played for the New Zealand Cricket Council against the Canterbury Cricket Association. He attended a Masonic function at tho Civic Lodge last evening, and to-day ho will visit Akaroa to lay tho fhundationstone of tho borough war memorial. Ho will leave for Wellington to-mor-row evening.

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Anderson) has arranged to visit the Nelson district at tho week-end for the purpose of inspecting tho new ironworks at Onakaka and Parapara, The Onakaka works are about to commence operations.

The Minister of Education (Mr. Parr) paid a visit to the Wairarapa district yesterday. A Press Association cable message from London states that the King invested Sir James Mitchell, Premier of West Australia, with the insignia of the Order of St. Michael and George, and conversed with him for half an hour. Tho Queen commanded Lady Mitchell to a private audience at Buckingham Palace. Tho interview lasted nearly an hour. The appointment is announced ot Mr. R. F. Ward to the position of local Deputy-Public Trustee at Auckland in succession to Mr. E. O. Hales, recently appointed assistant Public Trustee. Mr. Ward entered the service of the Lands and Survey Department in Auckland, as a cadet m February, 1908, transferring to the Public Trust Office in 1914. He held, a position on the legal branch in the head office until July, 1919, when he was appointed district solicitor at Auckland, which position he occupied until August, 1920, when he was appointed first assistant local DeputyPublic Trustee. Since September last Mr. Ward has temporarily filled the position of local Deputy-Public Irustee at Auckland. He is a qualified solicitor, and was for two years absent on active service with tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force. -At the Civil Service Club last evening, Mr. W. H- Wilson, who is leaving Wellington, was presented by the Wellington Cricket Club . with an umbrella, as a token of the regard in which he is held by that club. Mr. A F. Wiren, who made the presentation on behalf of the club, drew attention to Mr. Wilson’s cricket career as a junior, and specially emphasised the help he had always willingly given. Mr. E. Ward, club captain, also referred to Mr. Wilson’s qualities, and expressed the regret of the club on his departure. Mr. Wilson suitably responded. At Tuesday’s meeting of the national executive of the Y.M.C.A. appreciative and sympathetic reference was made ’to the work of the late Mr. W. M. Hannay, who was a member of the national executive during the war, and the following minute recorded: — “The Y.M.C.A. National Executive places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the late Mr. W. M. Hannay during.,the period of the Great War. His business ability, and his deep interest in the welfare of the New Zealand troops, and his keen desire to help forward the association’s ministry of helpfulness, were all evidenced in his selfsacrificing work. This executive desires to extend its deepest sympathy to the members of his family and his friends.” Mr. F. S. Hodson, of the local branch of Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., was a passenger by the Athenic, which sailed from Wellington for London yesterday. Lieutenant T. F. H. Marriott, R.N., and Sub-Lieutenant Micklethwait, R.N., of H.M.S. Veronica, were >passengers to England by the Athenic.

Mr. H. N. Liardet, the New Zealand manager of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., left by the Athenic on a visit to Great Britain, and expects to bo absent from tho Dominion for six months. Prior to his departure ho was met by the Wellington staff of the corporation, and as a mark of esteem presented with a suitcase. In making the presentation, Mr. M. Archer made reference to the personal interest Mr. Liardet had always taken in his staff and the kindly consideration at all times shown to them, and wished him a pleasant trip and a safe return. During Mr. Liardet’s absence Mr. M. Archer has been appointed acting-manager. Mr. W. H. Taitt left for Sydney yesterday by the Tahiti. .
