THE SONOMA ROBBERY
HOM' THE GOLD M’AS DISCOVERED.
Sydneyi December 30.
The. Sonoma has arrived, and details of the gold robbery supplied by her officers show that an extended search by detectives failed <o locate the money. Then Mr. Knudson, assistant engineer, on tapping a vent-pipe, noticed that it sounded unusual, and investigated. He found’62oosovereigns inside it. The finding of the boxes of gold in the harbour was made in the following manner. A wharf labourer heard a splash, and asked a nearby quartermaster if someone had fallen overboard, and the quartermaster replied : “No.” The man then saw a box sinking in the water. He thought it was a cask of whisky, but said nothing. When the robbery leaked out, he told the officers of his experience. The harbour was dragged, and three missing boxes of gold, strung together, were hooked up. In the meantime the quartermaster had disappeared.—Press Assn.
