The total births registered for ths four metropolitan areas numbered 760, as against 715 in July—an increase of 45. The deaths in August were 435 —an in-' crease of 14 as compared with the previous month. / Of the total deaths, males wore 214, females 221. Seventy-five of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 17.24 per cent, of ths whole number. Fifty-nine of these were under one year of age.
