HEAVY GREEK LOSSES
ARMY FOUGHT TO, STANDSTILL TURKISH CLAIM DIS"COUNTED By Telegraoh—Pres« Association—Copyright (Rec. September 16, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 15. The '‘Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent expresses the opinion that the Greek Army has been fought to a standstill, but says there is no evidence in support of the Turkish claim that the Greeks are in full retreat. The Greeks assert that they are only waiting for reinforcements before essaying an“other bid for Angora. The "Daily Express" Constantinople correspondent, states that the Greek losses are heavier than he cabled, lie now learns that there are at least 20,000 killed, wounded, and sick. The attempt to outflank the Turkish Army’s left v as a disastrous failure, and forced the Greek Generali Staff to launch a powerful <<f—flensivo in, th» centre, which failed. Finally Greeks attempted to outflank the- right and fared even, worse owing to the absence ,of roads. The Turkish counter-offensive is not likely to'be successful owing to the lack of transport, but the Greeks must retreat to Eskishehir before the equinoc- ' tial rains transform the roads into mor-asses.—Aus.-N.Z.
