A private cable message received in Christchurch states that Sir Joseph and Lady Ward will leave England for New Zealand early next month. —Press Assn. Air. William Baird, late representative for Messrs. Salmond and Spraggon, Ltd., Wellington, died on Wednesday, September 7, and was buried at Karori last Saturday morning. The late Air. Baird was well known to business firms throughout the Dominion, r.ot only as a commerical man, but also as a prominent member of the U.A.O. Druid fraternity. He was one of the founders of the Otago Lodge of Druids, being No. 1 on the register, and occupied the P.P.G.D. chair as far back as 1888. lie was stricken with a serious nervous . breakdown last December, and gradually got worse. The Rev. IV. Shirer officiated at the graveside, and Wor. Bro. J. Lachlan Jamieson, P.M., Lodge 'St. Andrew, 432 S.C., Dunedin, and Empire Lodge 225 N.Z., conducted the Alasonic burial service. Mr. Baird is survived by his widow, and she has the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends throughout New Zealand. Many beautiful wreaths and tokens were sent from his lodee, the Commercial Travellers’ Club. Messi*. Salmon and Spraggon. Ltd., and friends throughout the Dominion. His late colleagues of Messrs. Salmond and Snrnggon, Ltd., acted as pall-bearers, mid there wns a. representative funeral gathering.

A. Press Association telegram from Auckland states—The death has taken place of Mr. Bartholomew Kent, aged 71 years. Mr. Kent retired last June from the position of manager at Auckland of tho Alliance Company. He was five times .president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, was president of the first Auckland Exhibition, and took a keen interest in public affairs, sport, and mn'iic.

i Mr. AV. AVyinks. Registrar-General of Land and Deeds, Wellington, died in a private hospital yesterday'niorning. Mr. AVyinks had a. long and honourable career in the Public Service, and prior to his last appointment was DeputyCommissioner of Stamps in Christchurch.

Three months’ leave of absence from the City Council was last night granted to Councillor W. IT. Bennett, who intends to visit Australia. The Mayor on behalf of the council wished Mr. Bennett a pleasant journey. Air. William Wiggihs, a well-known business man, died yesterday morning at his residence on AVellington Terrace at the ago of 84‘years.. Born in County Cavan, Ireland, Mr. Wiggins arrived in Wellington in 1866. and started his business in that year. Later he rebuilt his premises on Lambton Quay, and sub-, sequently built the big grindery ware-1 fiiouse on the Ten-ace and a branch warehouse in Christchurch.' Mr. Wiggins took no part in local politics, but was always a liberal contributor to charitable and war relief societies. For many years a member of the Thorndon Bowling Club, ho had been unable owing to failing health to take part in play for tho past few seasons. The deceased, who was predeceased by his wife, leaves a. family of five sons (Messrs. AV. A.. E. AV., R. A. H., and K. E. AViggins) and five daughters (Meednmes C. E. Matthews, F. G. Alai thews, J. G. Chapman, and G. E. Leighton, of AVellington, and Airs. Norman Baker, of Sydney). The funeral will leave the late residence of tho deceased for the Karon Cemetery at 3 p.m. to-day. The City Council last night appointed the following to sit on the AVellington Technical College Board of Managers:— Councillors AV. H. Bennett, L. Al’Kenzie, and Al. F. Buckie. It was explained that the Alnkara County .Council, sitting with the Wellington City Coiincil. was entitled to fill one of the three vacancies with its choice. Tho county council, however, had not sent any of its members to take part in the election.
