SOME EXCELLENT SPECIMENS \ AT HUTT FLOWER SHOW' \ * 5 '' , The spring show, helct under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society at 'the Lower Hutt Town Hall .yesterday was a great success. The .Hutt Valley Horticultural Society is the pioneer horticultural society in the Dominion, and its objects are identical with those of the Royal Horticultural Society, with which it is affiliated. This year’s'spring or. bulb show is in several ,respects a record, both regarding entries and the quality of the exhibits; and, as one expert described it yesterday, that iwas largely due to the favourable jwba’ther conditions that had been expert- ' 'enced. during_the past three months. 1 There are on view this/year several .varieties of daffodils, which in normal seasons open” a little too late for exhibition purposes, and among the exhibitors are many of the Dominion’s leading growers of bulbs, besides several specialists of. note -interested in the raising of now varieties., • " ■ The outstanding exhibit of the show was that of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes,, displayed on his behalf /by Mr. A. E. Lowe; of Christchurch. In the trumpets, "Maungapui” and “Ninth ' Lancer, attracted the eye, while "Heart of Gold end “Red Trumpeter,” in the incomparabilis, made an excellent display. Of the leedsii, "Silver Plane” and "Ivory ’ Bell” were the choice of a really beautiful bloom. In describing Mr. Lowe’s /exhibit, Mr. G. A. Chapman, one of the judges, said that it was well worthy of the highest award that could be given, it by any society. In Mr. T. Waugh’s exhibit the prominent blooms comprised “Wendy” (leedsii),' "Robespierre" (incomparabilis), and “Wcredale” (trumpet), while Mr. R. Gibson displayed to advantage his “Croesus" (incomparabilis), and “Bas«ila" (leedsii). Mr. 'H. Poole was again responsible for a brilliant display of pot plahta and flowering shrubs, and-the decorative tables were quite a feature. The Licensed Victuallers’ Challenge Trophy fdr the highest/ - number Of points obtained irn sections ~JKto IB inclusive, waS won by Mr. R/ Gibson with 49 joints, Mr. H. Poole securing second position with 39' points. The R.H.S. silver medal was' jointly annexed by Messrs. A. E. Lowe, H.- Poole, and J. J. Reich, < and the bronze medal wah won by Mr. A. M'Millan. The'special, prize for the best long trumpet narcissi id the show was awarded to Mr. A. J. Hobbs, and that for'the best non-tnunpet to Mr., , A. H. Burgess’s "Croesus.”. Cooper. ' The show was officially opened by His. Excellency the Governor-General (Lord -. Jellicoe). On 'the platform were Lady Jellicoe, the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr| R-.P. Rishworth). and Mrs. Rishworth. and Mr., J. G. Helyer (the president of the .society). His Excellency expressed his pleasure , at being present, and said he felt it a high honour to be the patron of « society such as the Hutt Valley Horticultural His' Excellency congratulated the society Upon the excellence of its show, and trusted that its great purpose of educating* the people on horticultural matters would be successfully carried out.
