SYSTEM OF INDIVIDUAL DOLES CONDEMNED
LARGE ROADTNG SCHEME CONSIDERED

It considered the labour exchanges’ report, which stated that 1,527,000 were wholly unemployed, about 400,000 were working short time, while 290,000 had exhausted their unemployment benefits, having been out of work more than twenty-two weeks, but would be entitled to a further sixteen weeks from November 2. Cabinet decided that there must bo no extension of indivdual doles, which is the worst, means of relieving unemployment. The committee recommends that assistance be given to local authorities out of the Treasury. It lis understood that the committee contemplates thus spending ten million pounds. The committee’discussed a large reading scheme as a means of relieving the situation. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
