MANAWATU NOTES

Frofia Our Own Corresnondent. North, September 13. The buses imported by the Palmerston North Borough Council have now been running a week, and they have fully proved their usefulness. They are being very largely patronised, and duping rush hours they have beeil considerably overloaded, with the result that vehicles designed to' carry 28 seated and' 11 straphangers have had crowded into them from 60 to 70 passengers. As there is only one z door alongside the driver to act both as entry and exit, considerable delay has been experienced, which has prevented the time-table being kept. The matter was brought up at--the Borough Council meeting last night, when, it was decided to limit the load to 45 passengers. At o. meeting of Palmerston North High. School old boys last night it was decided to resuscitate tho High School Old Boys’ Cricket Club. Thc_ name was altered to the Old'Boys’ Cricket Club, thus making membership open to old boys of any secondary school. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Air. J. Murray; president. Air. AV. P. Anderson; vice-presidents, Messrs. O. Monrad, T. I?. 1 Hodder, W. F. Durward, J. A. Colquhoun, R. D. Hardie, and G. H. Bennett; management committee, Alessrs. M Hodder, W. Kandell, and C. Eglington; club captain, Air. M. S. Eglington. For some time past Hindu fruit hawkers have received licenses from the Palmerston North Borough Council for stands in the town. On several occasions deputations of shopkeepers have waited upon Hie council objecting to such an arrangement. T,he matter again came up at the Borough Council meeting last mgnt, and a motion was carried to the effect’that the present-license-holders 'be informed that no licenses would he issued after three months from date. A.f the meeting of tho Borough Council last night, the Alayor (Air. J. A. Nash, AI.P.) made an important _ statement in copnection with his negotiations with the council’s hankers to arrange tor the underwriting of borough loans in London. The amount required urgently by the borough fo/ electric lighting,' gasworks, and destructor was' £162.099. Added to this would ho a loan in connection with the gasworks amounting to .£30,030. Tho estimated cost of the loan after paying expenses would be -7 1-8 per cent, The .council authorised tho Alnyor to proceed with the negotiations, as tho money was urgently required, owing to, the electrical and gas departments being held up at the present time for the want of funds.
