TRAMWAY CONTROL

THE PROPOSED NEW REGULATIONS MAYOR REFUTES A STATEMENT The Minister of Public Works, who was interviewed last week by a deputation of tfamway workers and urged to put tho proposed now tramway regulations into force without further delay, has called a conference of five representatives of the local bodies and tramway boards concerned and five representatives of the employees, who are to meet here to-morrow with a view to coming to some understanding with regard to the matter. In referring to the regulations yesterijday, tho Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) said that, he wished to draw at* tention to one extraordinary statement which had been made by Mr. A. Monteith (representing the employees) in the course of the deputation to the Minister last week. Mr. Monteith had said in effect that he had been called upon to attend half a dozen inquests which •jwould not have been necessary had the regulations been in force. The Mayor said emphatically that such was not the ca,se. “We/do not know” of any death 'caused by air trams which could be held duo to the'non-enforcement of those regulations,’’ -said Mr. Wright. "Tho regulations, as drafted, would without doubt be felt here. They would be drastic, vexatious, and very expensive to

the City of 'Wellington if .the council were compelled to carry them out.”
