ACCUSED CHARGED WITH MURDER

Roscoe’ Arbuckle was formally charged with murder in tho Police Court at San Francisco.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. September 13, 8.5 p.m.) , San Francisco, September 12. The Arbuckle case, which promises to become one of the most sensational, as yet offers little definite information. The nurse who attended Miss Rappe and a friend of the actress swore the charge or murder, but details of evidence are not available. Arbuckle has been held over without bail until Friday. It is stated that tho police have sequestered persons who participated in the fatal party, and who will testify. The prosecution appeal’s to be taking every imaginable step to prevent Arbuckle’s friends \from influencing the course the State’ will take. '<

Miss Rappe, who was twenty-five years old, was a designer of gownsYand models before entering the moving picture business. She was engaged to marry . a New York movie director, Aho/at one time directed the Arbuckle pictures. Arbuckle, who is 34 years of age, was a • juvenile actor .-when eight. Several thea’fres in Los Angeles have discontinued the exhibition of Arbuckle pictures, while the Mayor,of one small city has ordered all the theatres to discontinue them until the'Arbuckle case is settled.—Aus.-N.Z. Mrs. Minta Durfee Arbuckle, the wife of the actor, from whom she voluntarily separated last year under an agreement whereby each can live according to wishes, declared that Arbuckle was innocent, and she would proceed to California to be near him until he was cleared. / The movement to bar Arbuckle films has spread. throughout the New York theatres, the owners voluntarily excluding them from programmes.—Aus.-N.Z; Cable Assn, *

(Rec. September 13, 11.10 p.m.) New York, September 12. Arbuckle had recently completed a movie comedy, wjiich is now being cancelled all over the country by the movie managers.

The papers state that Miss Rappe’s former lover threatens to come to San Francisco and kill Arbuckle. A great crowd watched Arbuckle when he was taken to and from the court handcuffed. He was remanded on tho formal charge of murder. The inquest was adjourned after a session which rather favoured the accused. —Reuter.
