After an exciting experience in Bass Strait, the four-masted barque Elginshire, which reached Port Philliv Heads on August 23, and after taking Pilot W. Easson aboard wan blown to sea. reached Melbourne on August 31. The barque left Auckland on July 20 in ballast, an<J experienced heavy weather during practically the whole of the passage. The fact that she reached Port Phillip Heads in 34 days is considered an exceptionally fine icrforraancc for a sailing vessel coming rom New Zealand in ba!'vet lit this time oUthe year. Describing their experiences on reaching Port Phillip Heads, an officer of the barque said that no sooner has* the pilot been picked up than heavy seak, with strong westerly winds, made progress impossible, and to have attempted to pass through the Heads would have meant disaster. The barque was then turned round and practically hove-to. The wind was, however, very strong, and witlrthe strong sea running the barone was carried awe.y to sea. On Sunday. August 28. they were drifting in the vicinity of Wilson’s Pro- ■ montory, and care had to be taken to avoid tho dangerous small Islands which
