PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Petone Borough Council met lest evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presiding. There were also present: Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, M. Ford, J. L. Churchouse, R. H. Jones,iW. Hay, A. Anderson, D. S. Bedingfield, G. Cook, R. A. Hartley.

The kfinister of Health wrote stating that he had noted that the council supported the resolution passed by the Westland County Council with reference to the question of increasing the proposed Government subsidy to hospital boards and levies for hospital maintenance purposes, and advising that the views of the council would receive his careful consideration.

Advice was received from the town clerk, Eastbourne, do the effect that the council's letter re the. gas supply to that borough would receive the consideration of his council at its meeting of September 23. The Salvation Army were granted permission to conduct a street stall sale (the proceeds from which will be devoted to the annual Self-Denial Fund) in front of the Council Chambers on the day and evening of Friday, September 30. A communication was received from the town clerk, Dannevirke,. requesting the council to siipport a. petition presented by hie council to His Excellency the Governor-General, to fully consider the whole question of contribution towards the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges by adjacent local authorities in order that legislation bo passed that would clearly, define end limit the responsibilities of local authorities in that direction, arid be conducive to the best interests of local body -government through the Dominion—lt 'was decided to support the petition. The Cricket Club was granted the use of three wickets on the Recreation Ground for the eniuifig season on terms similar to those of last year. The Hutt Valley Labour Day Carnival Committee was permitted to use the Recreation Ground on Labour Day on the usual terms. The Petone Croquet Club made application for a remission of the fee charged for visitors playing on the greens. It was decided to reply, stating that the council intended to adhere to its present scale of chargoa.
