MURDERED CONSTABLE

PROVISION FOR SWIDOW -AND CHILDREN. By Telegraph — Frees Association. Timaru, September 12. Tho Hon. E. P. Leo (Minister of Justice) was interviewed to-day by Mr. J. Craigie, M.P. for Timaru, in connection with the murder of Constable Dorgan. Mr. Craigie informed the Minister that a public subscription was being raised for the widow and children, and ho asked that tho Government should subsidise the ( ams>unt. The Minister stated that definite provision had been made by way of pension to tho widow and children. In these cases the same pension wae given as for tho widow of a deceased soldier, namely, £2 per week for the widow, and 10s. for each child under 14 years of age. In this case the total was £3 10s. weekly. Mr. Loe said that he had brought Mr. Craigie’s request, before Cabinet on Saturday, when' it was decided to supplement tho fund to tho extent of .£250, the Minister to be satisfied as to the appropriation of the fund. Mr. Lee suggested the advisability of vesting the fund in the Public Trustee, the widow to receive the annual proceeds, which, on her death, should go J o the surviving children. The Government recognised the plucky action of the constable in carrying out his'duty and exceedingly regretted that he lost his life in doing so. Mr. Craigie said that it was hoped that the fund would reach ,£lOOO.
