The Minister of Education (Hon. C. J. Parr) returned from Auckland, yesterday.

Anderson,' Minister of Labour, is reported to be making better progress towards recovery after, his recent operations, but he will not be üble to take his seat when Parliament meets next week. lington. e The death is announced from England of Air. Joseph Henry®Cock, managing director of J. H. Cock and Co., Nelson, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. Deceased was managing director of tho Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., one of the founders of the Nelson School .ot Music, .and a leading citizen for many years. Ho gave -£2OOO to the Returned Soldiers’ Club, and was a generous giver to worthy objects, including the assisting of promising musical pupils in tuition abroad.—Press Assn.

Mr. M. P- Ciuneron, the hardware and machinery expert to the Customs Department, will retire at the end ot this month after over 17 years _ service, having joined tho Department m April, 1904. Ho assisted the Hon. J. A. Millan Minister of Customs, when the 1907 tariff was enacted, and has just completed his labours as a member of the Royal Commissidn on the new tariff for 1921, whifth completed its sittings at the end of last month. Mr. Cameron had a serious breakdown in health during the war (when undertaking honorary extra duties in connection with the purchasing ot hardware requirements for the Defence Department. He has never thoroughly recovered from tho breakdown.

The death occurred at Petone yesterday of Mr. Walter Kerr-Hislop, elder son of Dr. and Mrs. Kerr-Hislop. The deceased, who was well known in Wellington served throughout the war'with the N.Z.F.A.. both on Gallipoli and in France sustaining serious wounds from shell-fire. Ho was ' a civil engineer 'by profession. Death was dur to pneumonia and pleurisy. ’Tho will take place at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Mr. J. F. Montague, of Auckland, is to act as judge of elocution at the Masterton Competitions next month. Mr. J. Prcndrville, Crown Solicitor, has loft for Te Kuiti to attend a meeting of the Native Land Court. x Mr. J. 0. Shetland has been elected to represent the school committers on the Technical Education Board. There were six nominees for the position.
