111 || j HEARING OF DISPUTE BEGUN. ’ I Hearing of tho New Zealand freezing works and related trafies' dispute was begun on Saturday by a Conciliation .Council, over which the, Conciliation Commissioner (Mt. W. Newton) presided. The assessoi%®4or the employers were:, Messrs. J. C.' Cbojier. H. G. Warren, S. Dickson, and J. Milne, and. ktr. A. S. Cookson appeared as agent. (Tlje unions were represented by Messrs.'! 1 . J. Niall and L. Price."'The other union assessor (Mr. F. Ellis) was unavoidably absent. Prior to beginning the actual hearing. the Commissioner asked whether tho dispute Was a, Dominion one, and whether the deliberations of the council would have Dominion application. Mr. Cookson said that the position did not differ materially in various districts. On tho assumption that the unions were agreeable, he thought that the hearing should be made to cover the North Island, and, also tho Marlborough district. Then, if' tho unions were satisfied, the South Island could be brought in. Applications for hearing had been filed in Auckland and New Plymouth in case there "was a necessity for councils to sit there. ’ Objection .to this course was taken by Mr. Niall, who eaid ho thought that the case should ba heard elsewhere as well. Unions had a right to be heard. Considerable discussion followed, in the course of which the /inion representatives signified that they did not favour any proposal to “rush”! the case through. Tho Council adjourned until 10.30 a.m. to-day, without having dealt with any of the clauses of the proposals and Counter-proposals.
