Vice-Rkgal. His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) has consented to open the annual art exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington. On the occasion of his departure from Wellington, Mr. Angus M. Nicholson, who has been promoted to be accountant of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., at Hamilton, was on Saturday the recipient of a handsome euit-case and a gold-mounted walking-stick, presented by the staff of the local branch. Mr. Alfred John Cross, of Normandale Street, Lower Hutt, died on Saturday moining, at the Wellington Hospital,

after a short illness. The late Mr. Cross joined the Public Trust Office in 1885, and during his long service with that institution held various responsible positions, including that of assistant local deputy-public trustee at Auckland and district manager at Gisborne. He was recently transferred to the Wellington district office as senior estates administration clerk. The late Mr. Cross, who was an extremely jiopular officer, and of a most retiring disposition; is survived by his widow and five children. Mr. James Pearce is gazetted a member of the Hutt Licensing Committee in place of Mr. W. Catton, who has resigned. . y Mr. E. Wind'4-y has been appointed as representative ef the Mal.-nra County Council upan- tho Technical College Board of Governor!!.

His Excellency tho Governor-General has recognised provisionally the appointment of Mr. Li Kwang Heng as ActingConsul for China at Wellington, and of Mr.- John E. Moran as Vice-Consul for tire United States of America at Wellington.

The late Mr. Donald M’Donald, whose death occurred lifSt week, was 58 years of age. He lias a native of Kingussie, Inverness, Scotland, and came to the Dominion when about 21 years of age. settling first in Marlborough, where he di d some shepherding on some of the big stations, and thence going to Hawke’s Bay, settling in Porangaheu district, and fieing employed on Tautane station. IMr the last twenty years he had resided between Weber and Waitahora,-’ and was regarded as “the father of the district." Deceased was an expert with stock of all descriptions, but specialised in breeding Lincolns. He- had acted as judge at agricultural shows all over the North Island, and was one of the founders of the Dannevirke A. and. I’. Association. His interests did not end there. He had the' distinction of fathering tho North Island Dog Trial Association, and started the first dog trials at Porangahau. He was also a keen fishing enthusiast, i Tho death took place at Russell, Riy of Islands, last week, of Dr. Benjamin Michael 'Moorhouse, well known m Christchurch for many years. Hrs father, who was also o> medical man, came out to New Zealand in the early days, and took up land in the Rangitata district. Dr. Benjamin Moorhouse was educated at a private school, and at Christ’s College, later going to England, where he studied medicine. He took his medical and surgical degrees at Edinburgh in 1883. and later became a member of the Itoyal College.of Surgeons, England. In 1901 lie took the degrees of MB. and Bac.Surg., in Glasgow Tn the interval he practised m Christchurch, where he was widely known and esteemed.

Reese has announced his retirement from uiterprovincial cricket, the annual report of the Canterbury Cricket Association states that the association wished to ■place on record ifs> keenest appreciation of Mr Reese’s sendees to Canterbury cricket, both as a ployer and as an official. ,
